Tournament Winner

Derek Phillips

If you didn't watch this event live, as it was happening, then you missed "the most intense event of the Pikes Peak Bass Masters season!" Derek Phillips came from behind in a 30 minute flurry that spun this championship completely upside down......literally. Derek was in last place throughout the event and was guesstimated to be 3 fish out of 1st place with one hour left to fish in the event! He boated 5 fish in that 30 minutes, 3 of those measuring the minimum 12" limit he need for them to count. With those 3 fish, he ran down the leader board, and put himself in first place by 5 ounces with 30 minutes to go! Nobody could get a good fish in the boat by the final whistle, and Derek squeaks on out when it counted the most! He will have his name engraved on the Challenge Cup as the 2104 Champion! Congrats goes to Derek Phillips on an awesome finish to the 2014 PPBM Season! For more info on this event, go to www.pikespeakbassmasters.com

Recap

Steve Cubbage had never been on the Championship lake. If he was concerned about that, he didn't show it and jumped out to a 2 fish lead right off the bat. He also lost at least 3 that might have made a difference. After the first period, Steve lead the group with a 1-14 total. It was going to be a tough day! ~~~~The second period ended with our already two time champion of the Challenge Cup, Todd Gentzel, catching a 1-14 fish to tie Steve's weight. Steve lost a giant at the boat, but still managed to catch a 2-1 to confirm in the others minds that he was intending to win this event! Derek Phillips caught a 1-3 to join the list on the Scoretracker, but really never had the guys looking back at him....yet.~~~~Third period found Steve falling to second, as Todd boated two fish and had 4-14 going into the last hour of the event. Steve was still at 3-15 and knew he needed one measly 1-lb fish to take the title from Todd.~~~~Oh yea....then there is the other guy nobody saw coming! It all ended, as you know, with the guy in last place getting on a pattern and slaying 3 fish when he really need them jumping Derek to 5-3.......a giant 5 ounces in front of everyone and just enough to take the title! Derek Phillips is the new reigning "Challenge Cup" Champion!~~For the others...too bad so sad!~~See you all next year! For more on this event, go to www.pikespeakbassmasters.com
